In 1102 AD, England was in the midst of a brutal civil war. King Henry had declared the powerful and wealthy Montgomery brothers, led by Robert de Belleme, outlaws. As both sides gathered their armies, the Horse Warriors, fighting for the King, found themselves under devastating attacks from the Welsh allies of the Montgomerys, led by the King of Powys.
In the midst of the chaos, our hero, Conn Fitz Malvais, is consumed with fury and grief over the murder of his squire, the kidnapping of his friend, Georgio and the death of his child. He is determined to seek revenge for this on Owen, the Welsh mercenary leader. However, other enemies threaten Malvais, and Robert de Courcy, the husband of the woman he loves, wants him dead at any cost. Meanwhile, shocking revelations will affect our Horse Warrior deeply as his mentor, Piers de Chatillon, orders him to carry out an assassination, a command he is unsure about obeying
.Everything now hinges on what happens when the huge armies confront each other. Will King Henry defeat his enemies, or will he lose his crown? If the Montgomerys win, will the Horse Warriors face capture or death? In the midst of this, Conn still has to deliver the ransom for Georgio to Shrewsbury Abbey, but his enemies plan to turn the abbey into a killing ground to take their revenge. Will Georgio still be alive? Or will Malvais find his cold, dead body in the abbey?
